Ross Thompson – Tribute by Phil Mahood
Ross Thompson of Nairn Ontario, is well known to Vincent Owners in Eastern Canada, and well beyond, for his sheet metal restoration skills. Just after Christmas he died suddenly and very unexpectedly from a heart attack. Ross was very fit, seemingly healthy, active, and very vibrant. This was a shock to the Vintage M/C community and a huge loss. Our deep condolences go to his family and friends.
We guess that Ross has restored well over 100 Vincent gas tanks many of which were lost causes. He also repaired/restored many sets of our valanced touring fenders. These are especially tricky because of the rust that invariably formed in the pressed seams. But, if it was even remotely repairable, Ross was the go-to guy.
Ross built his reputation with BSA owners doing metal-only repairs (no plastic body filler). This is critical because so many BSA tanks have chrome panels. It had to be all metal. So, he did his share of Royal Enfield, Brough Superior, and Series “A” Vincent tanks too. He was receiving exotic work from all over the world, such was his reputation.
The work was meticulous. On receiving a tank, he sent it to be acid dipped to remove rust and to expose all pin holes, pits and splits. Pressure testing showed him where all the repairs were needed. After pulling out dents and smoothing creases, he applied lead, braze, or weld as appropriate. Once smooth, he lined the inside so that it would never corrode again. From there, we took the tanks, fenders, headlight buckets, or what-have-you to our painter – most often John Connery. It was a path we walked for the past several decades in project after project.
As wonderful and valuable as Ross’ work was, he was perhaps most known for being one of the nicest people in our game. Always smiling, always helpful, he was a true gentleman. In recent times he wanted to spend more time traveling with his wife, going to rallies, and enjoying motorcycling. So, he stepped back from the workload and did just that. But he still found time to help us out if we really needed him.
He is pictured with Sonia at the legendary 2017 Cobble Beach Concours where his Norton won a 2nd place ribbon against the best field of bikes ever assembled in Canada. Also pictured is likely the last of the Thompson/Connery tanks, this one is for my 1949 Series B Vincent Rapide. Now even more of a treasure.

Ross is my brother-in-law. It is hard to remember a time he wasn’t in our family, as I was young when Sonia met Ross. I can remember wonderful times with Ross diving for pennies and doing dives off his shoulders in the pool. Walks and family gatherings. He was a kind, warm person who would listen and make us laugh. He taught us to pinch with our toes lol. We will miss you Ross. Lots of love and hugs to my sister Sonia, Amy, Adam and familiesxxx

Ross was the best big brother. He liked to call me “King Kid” as the baby of the family but Ross was really the big kid at heart. When he use to work at the Highway Collision on Highway 22 he would come home to the farm for lunch and watch cartoons with us. He would flip our mattresses over on a Saturday morning if we were sleeping in too late, tipping us off inner tubes in the back yard pool. Laughing so hard at a Christmas game of Balderdash he couldn’t read the answers.
And later, for being the MC at my wedding, taking us to cut our own tree for my daughter’s first Canadian Christmas and racing her in his pool every summer visit.
I respected Ross so much for the husband he was to Sonia, the father is was to Adam and Amy, grandfather he was to Jordyn, Collin, Ben and Lilah, the brother he was to all of us and the Son he was to our late Mother.
I was so proud of his ability to turn his hobby and passion for motorcycles into a business he loved, and that he was obviously greatly respected in that community. Every summer when I dropped by for a visit, he would be tinkering in his garage and show me his most recent restoration before taking a break for a beer and a swim.
I will miss Ross terribly but will carry with me many fond memories of my brother. My love and hugs go to Sonia Amy and Adam. I am sorry I can’t be there in person at this sad time to be with our families.
With Love and Sympathy
Anne Thompson-Wambua.

Donna and I offer our most sincere condolences to Sonia and the family. Ross was one of the first to extend a warm welcome and his friendship to me when we arrived here in Ontario three years ago. I am so sorry to hear about Ross. He is a role model motorcyclist. I feel so fortunate to have known him and always enjoyed any activity with he and Sonia.
Ross was a great listener, shared opinions, argued lightly and respectively and was supportive in sharing his knowledge and experiences and his love of anything motorcycles (and tractors). Particularly significant for me was the thoughtful leadership and enthusiasm he brought to the Ontario BSA Owners Group's foundation and it's ongoing growth.
My thoughts and prayers are with all those who loved him and those who shared in his life.
A genuine loss for everyone.
