Dear Rebecca
As Marilyn Haynes has told you I saw the notice in the paper of your Dad's passing. Although I have not seen him for many years I still remember very vividly our few times together with he and your mother. I was married to the late Mary Mason, who was the close friend of your mother and marilyn Haynes (Chilton). Mary passed away in 2003. Your mother and I did practice teaching together for 1 day while at Teachers College. It was a Grade 4 class and I was so shocked when she started wring on the blackboard with her left hand and then half way thru switched to her right hand to finish. You could not tell the difference. Of course the students were more than amazed- as was I. Please accept my sympathy at this time, but rest assured your Mom and Dad are with our Lord in Heaven. God bless you. Richard Lucas

It was a privilege to know Merlon Bender. He was a colleague, a coffee buddy and a good friend. Although my family left the community several years ago, I still think of him often. He was a proud father and grandfather, both thoughtful and kind. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to his family and friends throughout this difficult time.

I first met Merlon in the early 60's when I babysat Becky. When I was babysitting I used to love to look at Nova's cookbooks.
Then Merlon & Nova became friends of Mom & Dad's and used to play euchre with them.
I will always remember the good time we all had on the Lion's Club bus trip to Nashville. I think that was in the early 70's.
Merlon always had a friendly smile for everybody. He didn't have an enemy in the world.

You will be missed by all the tenants of Craigweil apartments especially me. Merlon was the first tenant to introduce himself to me when I moved in. He always spoke whe he passed me he was a wonderful carrying man. He visited the nursing home alot and spoke to everyone. My sister is the nursing home and he always spoke to her. You will be missed by everyone and your friendly smile. RIP Merlon.

Extending our heartfelt condolences to the Bender family and extended families at this time of your loss. It is hard to believe that Merlon is no longer with us, but rest assured he left a mark on all of us whose lives he touched. Merlon's comittment and enthusiasm for our little town, and his persistent efforts to encourage the 'community spirit' were always evident in conversations with him. Even during the past year or so with his failing health, Merlon still managed to look on the bright side and count his blessings. He will be missed; he was a friend to so many, and will be remembered with not only fondness - but with gratitude.
